PHP has been around for decades at this point. Its initial form was created in 1994 by Rasmus Lerdorf who created this language for his own personal website. That's where the name comes from - PHP is short for Personal Home Page Tools, or PHP Tools. As time passed, more and more functionality was added, such as database integration, which made it a much more appealing language. A year later, Rasmus released his source code for PHP Tools, which allowed for the development of the language to grow rapidly.

Only a year later after its open-source release, 1996 brought PHP 2.0 to the world. This release is what brought PHP out of script territory and well into programming language territory. The release brought support for several database servers, browser cookies, user-defined functions, and more. Each release has been considered as more or less a complete rewrite of the language's code.

1997 was no exception to the rewrites. PHP 3.0 brought a massive rewrite, essentially rethinking what PHP would be in the future. Now providing support for multiple databases, APIs and more, module support was added as well, allowing users to expand on the functionality of PHP itself. This version most similarly resembles the PHP we use today.

PHP 4.0 aimed to improve performance in 1999 with yet another rewrite, this time one for its core functionality. This helped improve performance greatly. Finally, PHP 5.0 brought a new version of the Zend Engine which brought in even more functionality. Currently, PHP is one of the most popular web languages in use in the world today.
